A friend of a friend had just become the Manager of the Wollongong branch and made contact with me as he was aware that I was on the lookout for a new job having completing my trade as a carpenter / joiner and working in this trade for 11 years.
How long have you been with Steel-Line? Any stories from back then you’d like to share with the team?
I joined Steel-Line Garage Doors in August 2001 as an Installation Coordinator. My interview was conducted by Marg K over a beer and a glass of chardonnay. After about 5 mins of conversation, Marg asked me when I would be able to start. I remained in this role for about 18 months before moving into a sales position, where I remained for 15 years before moving into my current role as a Branch Manager. I also had a short stint in sales for Boss Operators during that 15 years.
What is the best thing that happened to you whilst working here?
There would have been a number of things over the years but the one that stands out was being offered the position of Wollongong Branch Manager – that was a very proud moment for myself and my family.
What motivates you to be successful your role?
I’m motivated by my team members – seeing them grow and become confident and successful in their roles. As a group we all have the same goal to promote the Steel-Line brand and further grow the Wollongong Branch. I believe that leadership is not about being the best, it is about making everyone else better.
What would be your advice to anyone starting with the company?
If you are looking for a long-term career with the opportunity of promotions and possibility of working in various states within the company, then Steel-Line is the company for you.
What motivates you day to day?
I can honestly say I love working for Steel-Line and I really enjoy my new role as Branch Manager. I have a great team around me from my product consultants, admin, installation coordinator, warehouse boys / installers to my team of sub-contractors. Without them I wouldn’t be here, so my team and the branch keep me motivated day to day as we strive to achieve great results with our fantastic range of products and customer service.
What do you do for fun / what are you passionate about?
Summer time for my family is all about spending as many weekends as possible at our caravan on the beautiful Shoalhaven River. I like water-skiing, wakeboarding, Wakesurfing and knee boarding. When the wake boat isn’t in the water the jet ski is.
Best holiday ever and why?
There has been a number of fantastic holidays over the years with family, friends and our kids in California, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Fiji and Bali. It’s very difficult to pick the best but heading back to Hawaii in June this year with three other couples and five kids was just fantastic as Hawaii is such a beautiful place with so much to see and do.
If we looked at your Google search history on your personal pc, what would we see?
At present lots of new home searching as we have just placed our family home of 23 years on the market and purchased a new family home.
What is something no one at work would know about you?
After working with some of my colleges for over 10 years I’m not sure there is anything.
Best advice anyone has given you?
Believe in yourself and be confident, you will achieve great things.
Last book you read?
I am defiantly not a book reader but the last book I was convinced to read was The Ultimate Sales Machine by Chet Holmes.
