How to open your door in case of power failure

Power failures are common during cyclones however they can happen at any time.

In case of a power failure, you need to be able to manually open your garage door from the inside in case of emergency.

It’s a simple process however if done incorrectly there is the risk of harm.

STEP 1: 
Check to ensure your garage door is in working order and has not been dislodged from its tracks. If a door is opened manually and is not sitting in its tracks, there is a risk that it may fall down and cause injury.

STEP 2:
Locate the red manual release cord that hangs down from the motor.  Roller Door motors are located on one side of the garage door.  Sectional Door motors are located in the middle of the ceiling.

STEP 3:
Pull the red cord down firmly to manually release the door’s locking mechanism.  The motor will make a clicking noise.

STEP 4:
Go to the door and carefully push it up manually.  Do not try to pull the door using the manual release cord as it may snap under the load.

STEP 5:
Take care when operating the manual release when the door is open as the door may fall rapidly due to weak or broken springs.

STEP 6
When the power returns or it is safe to do so, re-engage the motor by pulling the red release cord down firmly.
